Here's the math almost nobody does at the register: take the price of the shoe, divide it by the number of times you'll actually wear it. That's cost per wear. It's the only number that tells you what a shoe truly costs, and it's the number that flips how a $450 sneaker looks next to a $120 one.
Most of us do the opposite. We look at the sticker, feel the sticker, and decide based on the sticker alone. Which makes sense. The sticker is the part you feel today. But the sticker is also the least honest number in the whole transaction, because it says nothing about how the shoe lives in your closet over the next two years.
